Direct field systems position sound masking speakers in the ceiling material and broadcast directly into the space similar to paging speakers. They are preferred under certain conditions, such as hard wall ceilings where sound in the plenum area (above the ceiling) is blocked from entering the space below. Other applications include extremely high ceilings and paging in stairwells.
